Currently, Nakamise Street hosts 89 shops, but who was given permission to set up these stalls? The answer is: those who cleaned the temple grounds. Here’s the backstory: After the Edo Shogunate was established, the population of Edo (now Tokyo) grew, leading to an increase in visitors to Senso-ji Temple. As the temple became more bustling, the people who helped clean the temple grounds were granted the special privilege to operate stalls along the temple grounds and the approach.
