Overview

This private day tour in Anuradhapura lasts about 4 to 5 hours and covers key historical sites in the ancient city. The tour stops at several important landmarks, beginning with the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, a sacred fig tree and the oldest human-planted tree with a known planting date. You then visit the Brazen Palace ruins, once a nine-story monastery built in the 2nd century BC. Next, the Ruwanweli Maha Seya stupa is featured, one of the tallest ancient monuments, followed by the Abayagiriya Stupa, which was the tallest stupa in the world when constructed. The Twin Baths (Kuttam Pokuna) showcase ancient bathing pools known for their engineering and artistry. The tour also includes the Samadhi Statue of Buddha in meditation posture, carved from dolomite marble. Other stops include the Jethawanaramaya Stupa, a large brick structure important for Buddhist learning; the Moonstone or Sandakada Pahana, a carved stone slab at entrances; and the evolution of stone guard stones with carvings. The Elephant Pond (Eth Pokuna) is a large ancient reservoir built to supply water to monasteries. The Dagoba of Thuparama is the oldest stupa in Sri Lanka, housing a relic of Buddha. Finally, the Isurumuniya Temple offers rock carvings and the famous Lovers sculpture, set beside a lotus pond. Admission fees are not included and must be paid separately.
