This 90-minute walking tour in Rome focuses on the Basilica of San Clemente and the archaeological site beneath it. The tour begins inside the 12th century basilica, where visitors see a gold mosaic above the central apse. The basilica was built over earlier structures, starting as a private home used for secret Christian worship in the first century. Participants then descend up to 100 feet underground through three levels. The first underground level contains the remains of a 4th century basilica that was forgotten after the 12th century one was constructed above it. Below this is the site of an ancient pagan Mitraic temple. The lowest level features ruins of Roman houses. Excavations continue at the site. The tour is guided by an expert English-speaking guide and includes entrance tickets to the archaeological site. Professional headsets are provided when there are at least five guests. Group size is limited to 15 people. This tour is not suitable for guests with mobility difficulties due to steps and uneven ground.
