This Kaituna River white water rafting tour in Rotorua lasts about two hours and includes hotel pickup from central Rotorua. Participants are guided by local and Māori guides who explain the river’s whakapapa (genealogy and stories), tikanga (customs and protocols), and cultural significance. The tour features rafting on the Kaituna River, including navigating the 7-meter (22-foot) Tutea Falls and rafting through a lively gorge. Groups are kept small for safety and comfort, and premium cold-weather gear is provided. A professional adventure photographer accompanies the trip, and photos can be purchased separately. The tour is operated by Kaitiaki Adventures and runs subject to favorable weather conditions, with options for rescheduling or refund if canceled.
Kaituna River Rafting Base
Participants are picked up from central hotels and the i-SITE/Information center 30 minutes before their scheduled time. They travel to the rafting base located near the last remaining kahikatea forest, where they meet local and Māori guides who provide a detailed safety briefing. Rafting equipment including wetsuits, helmets, booties, and life jackets is issued. After transport to the Kaituna River, the journey covers over twelve rapids and drops, including Tutea Falls (7 m/22 ft), through a volcanic gorge surrounded by native forest. Guides explain the river’s stories and its cultural importance. Upon returning to base, participants change into dry clothing, may view and purchase professional photos from the trip, and receive transfers back to their original pick-up point. The experience includes education on kaitiakitanga, tikanga, and the river’s significance to the local iwi.
