Overview

This walking tour of Salzburg lasts about two hours and covers the city’s main historic and musical sites. The group meets at the Salzburg Congress entrance near Kurgarten park, close to Mirabell Palace. From there, the guide leads you through Mirabell Palace Gardens, where scenes from The Sound of Music were filmed. You will then walk past Mozarteum University and the Salzburg Marionette Theater, viewing these landmarks from outside. The tour continues to Mozart’s Residence on Makartplatz, where Mozart lived and composed; entry is not included. Crossing the Makartsteg Bridge offers views over the Salzach River, followed by a stroll along the river promenade with sights of the old town and Hohensalzburg Fortress. You will explore Getreidegasse, the historic shopping street, and see Mozart’s Birthplace museum (entry not included). Additional stops include the Kollegienkirche (Collegiate Church), Alter Markt square, and the Residenzplatz with its Baroque buildings and cafes. The group enters Salzburg Cathedral to view its Baroque dome and frescoes. Nearby, you visit Domplatz square and the Mariensäule Fountain.
