Overview

This Sarasota trolley tour lasts one hour and forty-five minutes and focuses on the Amish and Mennonite communities that live and vacation in Pinecraft. The tour aims to build bridges of understanding by explaining the history, religious beliefs, values, and daily practices of these communities. It covers the seasonal migration of more than five hundred families who live in Pinecraft year-round and over five thousand who return each season from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Indiana. The tour includes a stop at Der Dutchman Amish Kitchen Restaurant, where guests have thirty minutes for shopping and to sample pie. From the restaurant lobby, guests walk up a double staircase to Carlisle Gifts for about fifteen minutes of browsing Amish-related items. Another stop is at Alma Sue's Quilt Shop for fifteen minutes to learn about Amish quilting traditions. The trolley is air-conditioned and provides bottled water and snacks during the trip. In April, the itinerary may change to include a visit to a local Amish furniture maker to explore the role of carpentry in Amish culture, as many seasonal visitors will have returned home. Guests must be at least ten years old and able to walk short distances at stops.
