Overview

This walking tour in Matera lasts between three hours and three hours and fifteen minutes and is designed for groups of up to 15 people. The tour begins with a twenty-minute visit inside the Cathedral Basilica of Matera, an example of Apulian Romanesque architecture dedicated to the Madonna delle Bruna, who is honored annually on July 2. Next, the group spends about thirty minutes at Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario, a historic cave house that illustrates how former residents lived. This stop also includes admission to the nearby neviera and the rock church of San Agostino al Casalnuovo. If Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario is unavailable, an equivalent cave house will be visited instead. The tour continues with a thirty-minute visit to the Church of Santa Maria de Idris, a significant rock church carved into a rocky outcrop and a symbol of the city. If this church is not accessible, the guide will take the group to the rock church of Santa Lucia alle Malve; if that is also inaccessible, the rock church of the Holy Spirit will be visited. Following this, there is about one hour of walking through the Sassi di Matera area, especially Sasso Caveoso, where the guide explains the origins and history of the city and shows various rooms carved into the rock that remain open for viewing. The tour ends with a brief stop of approximately five minutes at La Fontana Dell'amore "Amarsi Nei Sassi," which features five bronze statues representing how young people in Matera historically expressed their love through simple customs. The tour includes entrance tickets to the Cathedral, the rock churches of Idris and San Giovanni in Monterrone, and the Historic Cave House of Vico Solitario, as well as a tour guide service. Headphones are provided if the group exceeds ten participants.
