This walking tour of Savannah’s Historic District lasts about three hours and covers major squares and landmarks in the city center. The guide, a local with roots in Savannah, leads the group through topics such as historic homes, African American history, notable women, the Civil War, and the American Revolution. The tour starts in the morning after breakfast and finishes before lunchtime. You’ll visit nine different squares, beginning at Telfair Square where you learn about Mary Telfair and the Telfair Museum’s history. At Franklin Square, the guide explains the Haitian monument and the Haitian regiment’s role in the American Revolution, and also points out the First African Baptist Church, the oldest Black Baptist congregation in the U.S. The route continues through City Market, where you can hear about local shops, restaurants, and attractions. Other stops include Ellis Square, with its history of City Market and African American economic contributions before the Civil War; Johnson Square, featuring a monument to war hero Nathanael Greene and the story of his widow’s impact on U.S. history; and Wright Square, which has monuments to a railroad magnate and a Native American chief. Here, the group takes a short break at a nearby cafe, with restroom access and refreshments available for purchase. The tour also visits Chippewa Square, where the founder of Savannah, James Oglethorpe, is discussed; Madison Square, which includes the Jasper monument, several historic houses, and information on Savannah during the Civil War; and concludes at Monterey Square, where you learn about Casimir Pulaski, buried at his monument’s base.
