The tour begins with a hotel lobby pickup in Shanghai, followed by a walk to People's Square, the city's political and cultural center since 1994. Visitors see the large Light of Huangpu River fountain located in and around the square. The walk continues to Yunnan Road, historically the boundary between the French Concession and Shanghai’s residential districts. Along Yunnan Road, three local restaurants offer tastings of traditional Shanghainese dishes including scallion oil noodles, steamed buns, parched chicken, and soup dumplings served with black vinegar. These tastings together provide more than enough food for a full meal. Throughout the walk, the guide provides commentary on the city’s history and how locals eat and spend their leisure time. At the end of the three-hour tour, participants take public transport back to their hotel with the guide or, if preferred, are taken to Xintiandi, an area known for its combination of old Shanghai architecture and modern buildings popular with residents and visitors.
