Overview

This small-group walking tour in Corfu lasts about three hours and covers both food and cultural highlights of the city. The guide meets the group in front of the Old Fortress at the statue of Schulemburg and begins with information about the fortress from outside. The tour then continues into Corfu’s historic center. The route passes through Spianada Square, the largest square in the Balkans, where the guide explains its Venetian and French history and points out the Liston area, known for its cafes and restaurants. Next, the group visits the Palace of Saint Michael and Saint George, which houses the Corfu Museum of Asian Art. This museum contains around 15,000 works from the Far East and India and is located in a building dating from British rule in the 19th century. The tour includes a visit to the church of Saint Spyridon, the island’s patron saint, with about 15 minutes spent there. Walking through narrow streets, the group reaches Town Hall Square, a former Venetian noble neighborhood with an opera house and villas. About 30 minutes are spent here learning about the history of the town hall building. The tour ends in the Jewish Synagogue area, part of the old Venetian ghetto known as Evraiki, which was damaged during World War II. Included in the tour are snacks and either lunch or brunch, as well as a certified guide. The group also visits small local shops to taste regional products and meet the owners. Private transportation is not provided.
