Overview

Split is known for its well-preserved Roman ruins, especially Diocletian's Palace, built in AD 305. This private walking tour lasts about two hours and is led by a licensed local guide with knowledge of history, archaeology, economy, and politics, who lived through the Communist era and Homeland War. The tour includes a guided visit to Diocletian's Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, focusing on its architecture and history. Visitors will explore the medieval Old Town of Split, see the Cathedral of Saint Domnius from the outside with an optional paid entry inside, and view the main Riva Harbor promenade where the tour starts and ends. The route also covers the Peristyle (Emperor's Square), the Grgur Ninski Statue, Fruit’s Square with the statue of Marul, Narodni Trg (People’s Square), the Temple of Jupiter from outside with an optional paid entrance, the 500-year-old City Clock, and the Golden Gate, the principal entrance to the palace. The tour visits the palace substructures, the best-preserved part of the complex, and the Vestibulum, which was the main entrance to the emperor's private residence. The private format allows access behind usual tourist routes to provide a local perspective on Split's history and architecture. Admission fees and gratuities are not included, and the tour does not feature any costumed theater performances.
