Scotland's Highlands offer ancient monuments and historic castles amidst natural landscapes. This day trip from Glasgow lasts about nine hours and includes visits to several key sites. The tour starts in Glasgow, the largest city in Scotland, then picks up additional travelers in Balloch. It passes through Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, where there is a stop at the village of Luss for about 40 minutes. The route continues through the village of Tarbet and the sea loch village of Arrochar while heading toward Inveraray Castle. Inveraray Castle, the seat of Clan Campbell and home to the Dukes of Argyll, is visited for about 80 minutes (note it is closed from November 1st to March 31st). Here, visitors learn about the clan’s role in the Wars of Scottish Independence and see historic rifles linked to Jacobite soldiers. The castle also features a 16-acre garden. The tour continues to Dunadd Fort, an ancient royal center dating back to at least AD 683, believed to be the stronghold of Dál Riata Celtic kings. A stop at Kilmartin Glen follows, where there is a short walk to view over 4,000-year-old rock carvings including cup and ring marks. Visitors also see standing stones, stone circles, and burial cairns estimated to be more than 5,000 years old. Travel continues along Loch Awe, one of Scotland’s longest lakes, before reaching Kilchurn Castle. This ruined castle on Loch Awe’s banks was once a fortress, residence, and garrison before being struck by lightning. A 45-minute walk explores the castle grounds. On the return journey, the tour passes through the towns of Lochgilphead, Tyndrum, and Crianlarich within the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park. The guide provides commentary throughout, and transport is provided in an air-conditioned 16-seater minibus. The group size is limited to 16 travelers for a more personal experience.
