Overview

This boat tour offers a hop-on hop-off ticket valid for one day to visit the Borromean Islands on Lake Maggiore. Boats depart from Stresa Piazza Marconi, allowing travelers to create their own itinerary for between four and eight hours. The service includes GPS commentary and multilingual captains to guide passengers during the trip. The three main islands covered by the route are Isola Madre, Isola dei Pescatori, and Isola Bella. Isola Madre features a Renaissance palace and one of Italy’s oldest gardens, open from March 19 to November 1. Outside this period, the boat circumnavigates the island without stopping. Isola dei Pescatori is a small inhabited fishing village with a promenade and several restaurants. Isola Bella is known for the Borromeo palace and its terraced Italian gardens with statues, fountains, and a variety of plants. Passengers can spend as much or as little time as they want on each island, using the boat to move freely between them. The tour ends back at Stresa Piazza Marconi. Entrance fees for the palaces and gardens, as well as landing fees for each island, are not included. Food, drinks, and onboard restrooms are also excluded. The operator may cancel the tour with a full refund in case of bad weather.

Isola dei Pescatori

Isola dei Pescatori, also called Isola Superiore dei Pescatori, is the second stop and the only island inhabited year-round. It has a small village of about fifty residents, with narrow alleys leading to a lakeside promenade. Fishing remains an important activity, and visitors can find several restaurants serving fresh local fish.

Isola Bella

Isola Bella is the third stop and the most famous island in the Borromean group. It hosts the Borromeo family’s palace and an Italian garden laid out over ten terraces, shaped like a cut pyramid. The garden includes statues, fountains, and a variety of plants such as magnolias and camellias. The upper garden area, known as the amphitheater, is topped by the unicorn emblem of the Borromeo family.

In the 14th century, the Borromeo family, originally from San Miniato, became owners of the islands and initiated their transformation. The family continues to own Isola Bella and Isola Madre, along with the three rocks called Castles of Cannero, named for the medieval fortification ruins. Isola dei Pescatori is the only island permanently inhabited by a small community, while the two sister islands attract tourists who admire the two palaces and their gardens. The gardens are known throughout Europe for their landscape quality and the care and variety of plant architectures, consisting of over 2000 species. Isola Madre also hosts a large population of oriental birds such as white peacocks, golden pheasants, and parrots, which roam freely in the garden. Isola Bella’s garden has been carefully designed over centuries to have multicolored blooms year-round, rotating among various floral species including roses, orchids, bulbous plants, magnolias, orchards, azaleas, gardenias, and wisteria.
Upon arrival at Stresa Piazza Marconi, passengers should exchange their voucher at the ticket office before boarding. The boats are identified by a large Italian tricolor sail. Landing fees must be paid at the ticket office.
Entrance to the palaces and gardens is not included in the ticket price.
