by Arenal Jungle Tours
This eight-hour hiking tour starts in La Fortuna and includes private transportation, a local guide, and lunch. The hike covers the area around Tenorio Volcano, focusing on the Rio Celeste, where the Buena Vista and Roble rivers meet. At this point, a chemical reaction between volcanic sulfur and rainwater calcium carbonate turns the river a bright blue color. The trail also passes the Bride’s Veil waterfall, a notable natural feature along the route. Additional stops include the Tenorio Volcano viewpoint, mineral hot springs, and volcanic mud ponds. Towels and bottled water are not provided, so guests should bring their own if needed. Children must be accompanied by an adult, and the tour is recommended for those aged 12 and older. Any dietary or special requirements should be communicated at booking. A passport is required for this tour.
Tenorio Volcano & Rio Celeste Hike
The day begins early with a guided walk through rainforest trails inside Tenorio Volcano National Park, leading to the Rio Celeste Waterfall. The guide explains the river's distinctive sky-blue color caused by a natural chemical reaction. Along the route, there are opportunities to observe wildlife, birds, and tropical plants. The hike continues to “Los Teñideros,” where two clear rivers join to form the blue waters of Rio Celeste. The area’s volcanic history, geothermal features, and ecosystems are also discussed.
