Overview

The tour’s highlight is visiting the naturally formed blue ice caves on the west side of Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, connected to Vatnajökull, Iceland’s largest glacier. Guests explore one to three ice formations selected daily for safety and accessibility. These caves measure between 30 and 70 meters and offer opportunities to walk inside, take photos, and learn about glacial history from a professional local guide. The tour begins at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon’s main parking area where participants receive fitting for safety gear including helmets and microspikes or crampons. After boarding a 4x4 modified vehicle, the drive to the glacier base takes place, followed by a 5 to 20-minute hike over uneven terrain to reach the ice caves. The glacier and cave locations vary depending on weather and ice conditions. This small-group tour lasts about three hours, sometimes up to three and a half hours. The guide chooses the safest and most scenic route for the walk. The tour includes all necessary glacier equipment and carbon-neutral transportation. Food, drinks, and hotel transfers are not provided. The operator reserves the right to change or cancel the tour at short notice due to weather or safety concerns, with alternatives or refunds offered when possible.
