Overview

Tongariro National Park features a volcanic terrain shaped by ancient eruptions, including Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Ruapehu. This guided group walk covers the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a 19-kilometer trek that lasts about eight hours. The route passes volcanic craters, mountain springs, and emerald lakes, offering changing landscapes and vegetation as the altitude rises. The walk includes stops at Mount Ngauruhoe, known as the filming location for Mount Doom in Lord of the Rings, and Mount Ruapehu, an active volcanic mountain. The tour begins and ends at the Adrift Tongariro base in National Park Village, with transport between the base and the start and finish points included. The guide provides safety updates, monitors weather and track conditions, and supplies winter equipment such as crampons and ice axes if needed. Participants receive footwear and clothing to supplement a free allowance, and the guides assist with gear fitting and briefing at the base before the walk. Lunch, snacks, bottled water, and drinks are not included. Transfers from Taupo CBD, Turangi, and Whakapapa Villages can be arranged for an extra fee if requested. The tour requires a moderate fitness level and is available to those aged 12 and older.
