Step into a traditional machiya townhouse in Kyoto’s historic Nishijin district and experience the refined beauty of Kyoto Yuzen, one of Japan’s most celebrated dyeing arts. Held inside the artisan’s own home, this experience offers a rare chance to visit a traditional residence while taking part in an authentic hands-on craft. Guided by the artisan, you will select one or two colors, with the remaining tones carefully chosen to create balance and harmony. As you apply color to silk, you’ll learn about the tools, techniques, and history of Yuzen dyeing through direct practice. The calm atmosphere of the machiya allows you to fully immerse yourself in the process. You will take home your own Yuzen-dyed piece, a meaningful keepsake connected to Kyoto’s living textile heritage.
