Overview

This small-group, full-day tour lasts about 8 and a half hours and includes transport in a luxury 8-seater vehicle with an expert driver and guide. Leaving Vienna, the tour travels to the Wachau Valley, a prominent wine region known for its villages and scenic views. The guide provides commentary on the valley’s history, culture, and winemaking traditions, plus tastings of local wines and specialties. The group visits the medieval town of Dürnstein, famous for Richard the Lionheart’s imprisonment in 1192, where there is free time to explore the castle ruins and streets. Lunch at a traditional family-run Austrian wine tavern is available but not included. From May to September, the tour includes a 70-minute Danube river cruise between the villages of Spitz and Melk to view the valley from the water. During the winter months, the cruise is replaced by a guided visit inside Melk Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded in 1089 located on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Danube. The abbey entrance fee is included in winter. The tour operates in all weather conditions.
