by Holbox Whale Shark Tours
Isla Holbox is located where the Caribbean Sea meets the Gulf of Mexico, a region known for its marine wildlife. This group boat tour lasts about seven hours and begins with a light breakfast including coffee, tea, fruit, yogurt, and sweet buns at the VIP Holbox office near the ferry pier. After a briefing and receiving snorkeling gear, participants board the boat for a one to two-hour trip to the whale shark area. Along the way, the guide points out manta rays, dolphins, and sea turtles. At the whale shark site, guests enter the water two at a time with a bilingual guide to swim alongside these large fish, which can reach 45 feet (14 meters) in length. The guide instructs on how to observe the whale sharks respectfully within their environment. On the return trip, the boat stops near Cabo Catoche, the northern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, where guests snorkel at the “cuevones” reef. Here, it is possible to see sea turtles, nurse sharks, lobsters, squids, octopuses, and other reef fish. The tour concludes at Boca Santa Paula with time to swim and enjoy fresh ceviche made from the day’s catch. Guacamole and mango are available for those who do not eat fish. The boat then returns to Isla Holbox with a 45-minute ride. Included in the tour are bottled water, soft drinks, government fees, snorkeling equipment, and a bilingual guide.
