This whale watching trip to Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary departs from downtown Gloucester, Massachusetts, aboard the Privateer IV. Boarding begins 30 minutes before the scheduled departure. The vessel, designed for 300 passengers but limited to 150 for comfort and safety, offers restrooms and an onboard galley and bar where food and drinks can be purchased. The trip starts with a cruise through Gloucester Harbor, passing Cape Pond Ice, a location featured on the show Wicked Tuna, and continues to the Dog Bar Breakwater. Along the waterfront, passengers can observe fishing boats unloading their catch, lobstermen setting traps, and local wildlife such as harbor seals, gray seals, and various bird species. The main part of the trip focuses on whale watching at Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary. The excursion typically lasts between three and a half to four hours but may be extended if whales move farther offshore. A naturalist is onboard to provide information throughout the tour. The trip operates in all weather conditions, and appropriate clothing is recommended. Late arrivals are not entitled to a refund, so extra travel time is advised. Whale sightings are guaranteed.
