Overview

The Mu Mansion in Yunnan is also known as the Yamen of the Mu family chieftains in Lijiang, and it is a brilliant landmark where multi-ethnic cultures converge in northwestern Yunnan. This ancient architectural complex, hailed as the "Forbidden City of Lijiang," was first built in the 15th year of Hongwu in the Ming Dynasty. It underwent over 470 years of construction and was passed down through 22 generations of chieftains across the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Although damaged by wars and earthquakes, its reconstruction still perfectly preserves the essence of Han, Naxi, Bai, Tibetan, and other multi-ethnic architectural arts. It embodies the rise and fall of the Naxi people, tells the moving stories of interaction, exchange, and integration among various ethnic groups in the southwestern frontier, and serves as a core window for understanding Lijiang's ancient city culture and experiencing the charm of western Yunnan. The soul of the Mu Mansion lies in its rich multi-ethnic cultural integration. It is not only the residence of the Mu family chieftains but also a living example of interaction, exchange, and integration among various ethnic groups in the southwest. Architecturally, Han-style dougong (bracket sets) and flying eaves, Naxi-style Chuan Dou (pier-and-tie beam) structures, Tibetan painted decorations, and Bai carved craftsmanship are perfectly integrated, built by skilled artisans from various ethnic groups. Culturally, the Mu family chieftains actively absorbed Central Plains culture, promoting the harmonious coexistence of Han Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, Taoism, and indigenous Dongba religion. The "life-and-death friendship" between Chieftain Mu Zeng and Xu Xiake (a famous Ming Dynasty geographer and traveler) became an enduring tale of cultural integration between the Central Plains and the frontier. Today, the mansion still displays Dongba scriptures, Naxi costumes, and folk artifacts, recreating the daily life scenes of the chieftains. The Mu Mansion embodies half of the Naxi people's history, engraves the imprints of multi-ethnic integration, and showcases the "diverse yet unified" pattern of the Chinese nation. It is not only a treasure of architectural art but also an important carrier for inheriting loyalty, inclusiveness, and ecological culture, telling the legendary stories of the Mu family chieftains in maintaining national unity and promoting ethnic integration. Today, this ancient mansion, having weathered many changes, still shines brightly, welcoming visitors from all directions, allowing every visitor to understand Lijiang's thousand-year splendor and feel the profoundness of the western Yunnan land amidst its carved beams and painted rafters.
