Navigator and explorer Captain James Cook never lived in the cottage – he'd been away from home for almost 10 years when his father built it – but this connection to the Cook family was enough to prompt Grimwade to transport the cottage to the other side of the world.

Enjoy a visit to the historic landmark 'Cook's Cottage', Australia's oldest building. It was built back in 1755 by the parents of Captain James Cook, in Yorkshire England. In 1934, Sir Russell Grimwade had the cottage shipped to Melbourne (each brick numbered and packed into barrels).
Are there any living descendants of James Cook?
Two of the others (James and Nathaniel) died at sea whilst serving in the Royal Navy. The youngest of the family, Hugh Cook, died whilst at college at Cambridge. None of their children had married and had children of their own, so there are no descendants from the Cook family.
