The original Golden Pavilion is believed to have been constructed in 1399. Gold was an important addition to the pavilion because of its underlying meaning. The gold employed was intended to mitigate and purify any pollution or negative thoughts and feelings towards death.

Is the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto real gold?

Kinkaku is a three-story golden pavilion, made of wood covered with gold foil on lacquer. The current pavilion was rebuilt in 1955 and refurbished in 1987, using 20kg worth of Gold - 10.8cm×10.8cm gold foil×200,000 pieces. It costed 7 hundred million yen (about 7 million US dollar) at the time.

Why was the Golden Pavilion burned down?

n July, 1950, art lovers were shocked to hear that the Kinkakuji--the Temple of the Golden Pavilion--in Kyoto had been deliberately burned by a crazed young monk. At his trial, this ugly, stammering priest said that his hatred of all beauty had driven him to destroy the six-century-old building.
