The church has a long history which stretches back to 1270, when a Franciscan priory was founded on what is now Riddarholmen. The Riddarholmen Church was built in conjunction with King Magnus Ladulås's founding of the Franciscan Monastery in Stockholm in 1270 and was completed in circa 1300.
