How old is Barley Hall, York?

The oldest parts of Barley Hall date from about 1360, when the Hall was built as the York townhouse of Nostell Priory, a monastery near Wakefield in West Yorkshire. A new wing was added to the building in about 1430.

How long to spend at Barley Hall, York?

Tours are 11am and 2pm and free. We stayed 2+ hours. The children's area upstairs in brilliant - we enjoyed playing the Fox and Geese game, and creating our own beasts of Barley Hall. We love history and enjoyed our visit to Barley Hall.

Barley Hall was leased by the Augustinian priors of Nostell near Wakefield to private citizens – most notably around 1480 to Alderman William Snawsell, goldsmith, Lord Mayor of York, MP for the city, and Master of the Royal Mint.

How long does it take to tour Barley Hall?

It'll take up to an hour to tour. Went to the haunted hall experience, it was a lovely 45 minutes of joy and pleasure and horror! I never thought it was possible for my wife to jump at a mouse squeak but this is what the evening brought us! The actor was sublime with puns and poetry from the plague to monk ghosts!
