Overview

This 90-minute walking tour of Adelaide Oval reveals the workings behind one of the city’s most historic sporting venues. Led by a volunteer guide, visitors follow a steady path that includes steps, stairs, ramps, escalators, and lifts through both new and heritage parts of the stadium. The tour covers about 2.5 kilometers and visits restricted areas, including the player’s race where crowds cheer during events and the interior of the famous heritage scoreboard. The stadium combines modern design with historic features such as the century-old Moreton Bay Fig trees, the grassed northern mound, and the heritage scoreboard, which together create an embedded museum with points of interest throughout the grounds. Guides share different stories each season, highlighting the oval’s history and its role as a venue for major sports and world-famous concerts. Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing since part of the route is outdoors. While at the oval, guests can also explore the nearby Bradman Collection in the State Library of South Australia, which charts Sir Donald Bradman’s cricket career and contributions. The collection is free to the public Monday through Friday from 10am to 4pm but is not included in the tour. Food and drinks are not included. The tour requires enclosed footwear, and children must be accompanied by an adult. Note that wheelchair access is not available inside the heritage scoreboard but is provided in all other areas.
