The three main canals—Herengracht, Prinsengracht, and Keizersgracht—were dug in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age and form concentric rings around the city. There are 1550 monumental buildings along these canals. This canal ring area was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2010.
Singel
The Singel canal once surrounded Amsterdam as a moat during the Middle Ages until 1585 when the city expanded beyond it. It runs from the IJ bay near Central Station to Muntplein square, where it joins the Amstel river. It is now the innermost canal in Amsterdam’s semicircular canal ring.
Magere Brug
The Magere Brug, known in English as the Skinny Bridge, is a wooden drawbridge over the Amstel. Originally very narrow, it was replaced in 1871 by a wider bridge to accommodate increasing traffic.
Munt Tower (Munttoren)
The Munttoren, or Mint Tower, was part of the Regulierspoort gate with towers on each side, built between 1480 and 1487 as part of the medieval city wall. In the 17th century, it was used for minting coins.
Bloemenmarkt
The Amsterdam Flower Market is the only floating flower market worldwide and is known for its fragrance in all seasons. Established in 1862, the flower stalls stand on houseboats, recalling the time when the market was supplied daily by boat.
