Architect Jean-François Chalgrin took inspiration from the Roman Arch of Titus with a single arch but increased its size to about 50 meters high, 45 meters long, and 22 meters wide, removing columns. Commissioned by Napoleon in 1806, it was inaugurated in 1836 by King Louis-Philippe, who dedicated it to the armies of the Revolution and the Empire. The Unknown Soldier was buried at the base in 1921, and the flame of remembrance is rekindled daily at 18:30.
