Overview

This private half-day tour in Athens lasts about five hours and covers the city's main historic sites. The tour includes a two-hour visit to the Acropolis, where you see the Propylaea, Parthenon, Erechtheion, and Temple of Athena Nike. From the Acropolis, you can also view the Theater of Dionysus and the Odeon of Herod Atticus. You then stop at the Temple of Olympian Zeus, a large ancient temple started in the 6th century BC and finished under the Roman Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD, once known for its 104 columns. Next is the Panathenaic Stadium, the only stadium built entirely of marble, with a history going back to 330 BC and use in the first modern Olympics in 1896 as well as the 2004 games. The tour also includes a visit to Mount Lycabettus, a limestone hill 300 meters high with pine trees at its base and a chapel, theater, and restaurant at its peaks. You will witness the Changing of the Guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by the Evzones, an elite Greek army unit. The Arch of Hadrian, a monumental gateway honoring Emperor Hadrian, is another stop. Finally, the tour finishes with a one-hour visit to the Acropolis Museum, which opened in 2009 and displays archaeological finds from the Acropolis site. The tour is conducted in a Mercedes air-conditioned vehicle with WiFi, mineral water, fuel, and tolls included. An English-speaking driver will provide transportation but does not escort guests inside sites or museums. The itinerary can be adjusted to avoid long lines, and skip-the-line pre-purchased tickets are available at extra cost. Entrance fees, a licensed tour guide, lunch, and gratuities are not included but a guide can be booked on request.
