Overview

This 8-hour bus tour on the Big Island of Hawaii climbs to the Mauna Kea summit at 13,796 feet to watch the sunset. Guests are picked up from several locations in Kailua-Kona, Waikoloa, and Waimea between early and late afternoon. The tour first stops at the Onizuka Visitor Information Station at 9,000 feet for an early dinner, altitude acclimatization, and to change into provided snow parkas, ski pants, and gloves if needed. After dinner, the van continues to the summit where visitors spend about an hour viewing the sunset and the observatories at the highest peak in Hawaii. Following sunset, the group descends to the Onizuka Astronomy Complex for about 45 minutes of stargazing with a refractor telescope and laser pointer. The guide explains stars, constellations, and planets, and takes photos of guests with a DSLR camera. Weather and moon phase affect star visibility and the exact stargazing location may change. The tour includes a 4x4 passenger van, admission fees, dinner, winter clothing, an astronomical telescope, and free photos transferred to guests’ smartphones. The group returns to the pickup points after stargazing.
