Isola Bella
Isola Bella was donated in 1806 by Ferdinand I of Bourbon to Pancrazio Ciprioti, mayor of Taormina. It was purchased in 1890 by Florence Trevelyan, who built a small house and planted rare precious essences. Later, it was inherited by lawyer Cesare Acrosso. In 1954, the brothers Leone and Emilio Bosurgi bought it for 38,000 ₤ and built a village with 12 autonomous residences and a small swimming pool hidden among rocks and plants. Following the Bosurgi family's company bankruptcy in 1982, the island was put up for auction twice—in October 1984 with a base price of five and a half billion lire and a minimum raise of one hundred million, and in March 1985 with a 20% lower base price—but no buyers appeared. On 8 October 1984, the Sicilian Region declared Isola Bella a natural monument, placing it under protection. The island was finally acquired by the Department of Cultural Heritage in 1990. A nature reserve was established in 1998, initially managed by WWF, then by the Province of Messina, and more recently by CUTGANA, the University of Catania’s environmental center. Since 2010, management has been under the Archaeological Park of Naxos. In 2006, Isola Bella and Taormina were added to the UNESCO Tentative List.
Taormina
Taormina is a hilltop town on Sicily’s east coast near Mount Etna. It is known for the Ancient Theater of Taormina, a Greco-Roman theatre still in use. The town’s cliffs drop to the sea, creating coves with sandy beaches. A narrow sand strip links the coast to Isola Bella, a nearby nature reserve. This tour provides views of Taormina’s coastline as seen from the water.
Mazzaro
Mazzaro beach is one of the most popular and upscale beaches in Taormina. It faces the sea directly and has a cable car station connecting the beach area to Taormina’s center, allowing convenient access between the two.
