Overview

This 2-hour walking tour through downtown Charleston focuses on the lost stories of Black Charleston. The tour is led by Damon Fordham, a writer, historian, educator, and licensed guide. It begins at the Charleston City Market, a historic marketplace, where the guide shares forgotten folktales and stories about Black heroes and heroines often left out of history books. The group then walks to the Jehu Jones Hotel and Catfish Row, the latter known for its connection to the opera Porgy and Bess. Next, the tour passes the Heyward-Washington House, once the home of Thomas Heyward Jr., a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The route continues to the Old Slave Mart Museum, a former site of slave auctions. Along the way, the guide points out lesser-known local places important to Black history and explains Charleston’s path from slavery through Reconstruction to the civil rights era. The tour concludes with a walk along Charleston Waterfront Park by the harbor. The tour includes narration by Damon Fordham and covers all stops on foot. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Gratuities are not included.
