by Rainbow Glacier Adventures
The tour begins in Skagway with a 45-minute ride on a high-speed catamaran through the steep-walled fjords of the northern Lynn Canal to Haines. During the ride, passengers can see more than a dozen waterfalls dropping hundreds of feet on both sides of the boat. A naturalist is on board to point out features along the way. Upon arrival in Haines, the guide meets the group and leads a short visit to the town, providing information about the local wildlife, plants, and ecosystems. The group then drives toward Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Area, stopping along the way for a bear safety briefing and an explanation of the Lynn Canal ecosystem. At Chilkoot River, travelers spend about one hour observing seasonal wildlife. From May through July, wildflowers bloom and bald eagles tend to their nests. Starting in late July, migrating salmon enter the river, attracting brown bears to the riverbank. Bear sightings are most frequent from early August to late September. Within Chilkoot Lake State Recreation Area, the guide selects scenic stops for wildlife and nature viewing. A spotting scope is used to observe animals more closely, and the guide explains their behaviors and roles in the environment. Lunch is served at Nukdik Point, which offers views across the water to Haines and the Chilkat Mountains. The tour also includes a visit to Fort William H. Seward National Historic Landmark, built in 1904 and now privately maintained, overlooking the Port Chilkoot Cruise Ship Dock. Transportation on the fast ferry, a guide, lunch, and port pickup are included. The full tour lasts about 6.5 hours.
