Overview

Rome holds many of the most important remains of its ancient past, including the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill. This small group walking tour lasts about three hours and covers these sites with a guide who speaks fluent English. The tour begins at the Roman Forum, a rectangular area once the city’s marketplace and political center, surrounded by ruins of government buildings. The guide spends around an hour here explaining the Forum’s history and notable structures such as the Tempio di Romolo, a rare well-preserved monument incorporated into a church entrance, and the Casa delle Vestali, the former residence of the Vestal Virgins. Visitors also see the ruins of the Tempio di Saturno located at the western edge of the Forum, and two basilicas: Maxentius, which was the largest building in the Forum, and Julia, used for public meetings. After exploring the Forum for about an hour and a half, the group moves to Palatine Hill, one of Rome’s oldest areas, where imperial palaces once stood. The hill is now an open-air museum with a nearby Palatine Museum housing artifacts from the site and other ancient locations. The tour ends at the Colosseum, where the guide discusses the history of this large marble amphitheater built to hold over 50,000 spectators for gladiatorial contests and animal fights. The visit includes entry tickets and a reservation fee, and for groups of six or more, headsets are provided. The tour does not include transportation to or from meeting points, food or drinks, or gratuities. Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and bring water due to stairs and uneven surfaces.
