Overview

This tour begins about one hour after the cruise ship docks at Costa Maya Port, departing from Plaza Las Fuentes, which is a short walk of approximately 15 minutes from the ship. The total duration of the tour is about five and a half hours. The first stop is Chacchoben Mayan City, an archaeological site dating back to around 200 BC, located in the jungle. A certified guide leads a 90-minute tour of the ruins, explaining the monuments and pointing out native plants and animals. Photography is allowed with a five-dollar camera fee paid directly at the site, but tripods and drones are prohibited. After the visit to Chacchoben, the tour continues to Bacalar Lagoon, known historically as a pirate refuge. Visitors spend about two hours at the lagoon, where they can relax by the water, swim, or use the provided kayaks to explore the seven-color waters. Lunch is included at the lagoon’s edge and consists of fajitas and a drink. Transportation between locations is provided in an air-conditioned vehicle. Bottled water and kayaking equipment are included. Participants should note the kayak weight limits: 220 pounds for single kayaks and 270 pounds for double kayaks. Souvenirs, alcoholic beverages, gratuities, and the camera fee at Chacchoben are not included.
