A certified guide leads a 90-minute tour of the ruins, explaining the monuments and pointing out native plants and animals. Photography is allowed with a five-dollar camera fee paid directly at the site, but tripods and drones are prohibited. After the visit to Chacchoben, the tour continues to Bacalar Lagoon, known historically as a pirate refuge. Visitors spend about two hours at the lagoon, where they can relax by the water, swim, or use the provided kayaks to explore the seven-color waters. Lunch is included at the lagoon’s edge and consists of fajitas and a drink. Transportation between locations is provided in an air-conditioned vehicle.
