Overview

This full-day bus tour begins with a departure from Cairns, heading south past Walsh’s Pyramid. The guide will stop for photos of this large natural pyramid before continuing along the Gillies Highway, climbing 730 metres and offering views over the Goldsborough Valley. There is a brief stop at Heales Lookout before entering the Atherton Tablelands. The first main stop is Lake Barrine, a crater lake surrounded by World Heritage rainforest. Here, the group can enjoy morning tea with freshly baked scones, jam, cream, and locally brewed tea or coffee (included with certain options). The lake area often reveals birds such as pelicans and ducks, along with reptiles including turtles, eels, water monitors, and snakes. Next, the tour visits the 600-year-old Curtain Fig Tree in Mabi rainforest. Accessible by boardwalks, this tree is the most visited in the region. The nearby rainforest is home to the rare Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo, which may be spotted in season. Afterward, the group stops at Millaa Millaa Falls, a well-known waterfall dropping about 20 metres over volcanic basalt into a rainforest pool. The falls have appeared in advertisements and films. The tour includes a short drive through a local country town with many Art Deco buildings before arriving at Paronella Park in the afternoon. Visitors receive a 30-minute guided tour of the Spanish-style castles and heritage gardens, led by guides who speak English, Chinese, and Japanese. Paronella Park, built in the 1930s by José Paronella, features the region’s first hydro-electric power plant and National Trust-listed ruins. The tour lasts about 11 hours and includes national park fees, lunch, live commentary, and a professional guide. Commentary outside Paronella Park is in English only.
