Amarante is the first stop, lasting about 45 minutes. The town lies near the Serra do Marão mountains and the Tâmega River, which runs through it. Amarante may have Roman origins and is linked to St. Gonçalo, who built a bridge over the river in the 13th century. The town is known for traditional sweets like papos de anjo, brisas do Tâmega, and bolos de São Gonçalo, available in local bakeries.
