Overview

The tour starts by boarding a coach in Edinburgh equipped with air conditioning and a knowledgeable driver-guide who provides live commentary throughout the trip. The journey follows the coastal route to the ancient kingdom of Northumbria, covering about 9 and a half hours in total. The first main stop is Holy Island, also known as Lindisfarne, where travelers spend about an hour exploring the ruins of Lindisfarne Priory, noted for the production of the Lindisfarne Gospels. Visitors can also sample Lindisfarne Mead, brewed by monks on the island. Note that on certain tide dates, the island is not visited due to access restrictions. Next, the coach travels to Alnwick, a lively market town. Guests have approximately two and a half hours here to either explore the town center or visit Alnwick Castle, the home of the Percy family for over 700 years and a significant medieval building often called "The Windsor of the North." The castle grounds include the Alnwick Garden, featuring the Grand Cascade and the Poison Gardens, with parts of the location used in the Harry Potter films. If time allows, the tour includes a brief stop at Flodden Battlefield for about 15 minutes. This site is one of the best preserved battlefields in Northern Europe and marks the location of the 1513 battle where King James IV of Scotland was killed and the English won. The tour includes air-conditioned transport, live commentary, and a driver-guide but does not cover entrance fees, food or drinks, gratuities, onboard restrooms, WiFi, or certain castle entries. Frequent restroom breaks are provided at stops. The tour operates in all weather, with digital translations available in multiple languages upon request, and requires guests to arrive 15 minutes before departure.
