Overview

Famagusta is a city on the east coast of Cyprus, known for its abandoned Varosha resort area and medieval walled city. This half-day mini bus tour from Protaras and Ayia Napa runs about four and a half hours and includes hotel pickup and drop-off. The tour begins at the Cultural & Heritage Center in Derynia, where a short film shows Famagusta before the 1974 invasion. From the center's roof, guests observe Famagusta across the border using binoculars. Refreshments can be purchased here. Next, the tour crosses the border and drives along the fence surrounding Varosha, the ghosted resort, allowing close views of deserted hotels on the sandy beach. The group then circles the moat of Famagusta’s gothic walled city, with its castle walls towering above. Inside the walls, the guide explains the history of the 365 former churches and cathedrals. Visitors have free time to explore the old town on foot, visit St George Cathedral and Othello Castle, or relax at a café with local sweets. The final stop is a walk through the streets of the abandoned hotels and shops leading down to the golden sandy shore and back. The guide provides detailed historical commentary throughout. The tour operates in all weather conditions but requires passports for crossing the border, with some nationality restrictions.
