This Florence Duomo walking tour lasts about three hours and begins with a guided visit of approximately two hours covering the Baptistery of San Giovanni, the Opera del Duomo Museum, and the exterior of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, including its façade. The guide provides detailed information and stories at each stop. After the guided portion, participants climb Brunelleschi’s Dome using a reserved time slot. The climb involves 463 steps through narrow staircases and takes about 45 minutes. At the top, climbers can enjoy a panoramic 360-degree view of Florence. The Dome climb is physically demanding and not suitable for pregnant people or those with heart, respiratory, vertigo, claustrophobia, or mobility issues. Children must be accompanied by an adult during the climb. The tour includes a ticket valid for independent visits to the Cathedral interior and Crypt of Santa Reparata within three days of the Dome climb, subject to opening hours and closures on Sundays or religious events. For visits through 2026, the ticket also allows an independent climb of Giotto’s Bell Tower, which has 414 steps and takes about 45 minutes, to be completed within two days of the tour. From 2027 onward, access to the Bell Tower and Crypt is no longer included. Headsets are provided for groups larger than five. The guide does not accompany visitors inside the Cathedral, Crypt, or during the Dome and Bell Tower climbs. Most departures start with the Baptistery, Museum, and Cathedral exterior before the Dome climb, but some early departures begin with the Dome climb followed by the Museum and other self-guided visits. The Opera del Duomo Museum is closed on the first Tuesday of each month; on those days, the guided tour covers the Dome, Baptistery, and Cathedral façade, with the Museum available for independent visits later. Visitors must follow a dress code covering shoulders and knees to enter religious sites. Large bags are not allowed inside, but free luggage storage is available nearby. Official tickets are sent separately before the visit and should be downloaded in advance.
Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore
The tour begins at the Cathedral façade, featuring tall marble sculptures and Gothic architecture that reflect Dante’s Florence. The guide explains the historical and artistic significance of the façade’s details over about 30 minutes.
30 min
Museo Dell'opera Del Duomo
Next is the Opera del Duomo Museum, where visitors spend around one hour. Highlights include Michelangelo’s unfinished Pietà and Ghiberti’s Gates of Paradise with their gilded panels. The museum rooms display important Renaissance artworks linked to the Duomo.
60 min
Battistero Di San Giovanni
The tour continues inside the Baptistery for approximately 30 minutes. The ceiling mosaics depict scenes of heaven and hell, historically part of Medici weddings and Dante’s baptism. The mosaics are undergoing restoration, so some parts may not be visible.
30 min
Cupola Del Brunelleschi
Participants then climb Brunelleschi’s Dome, a physically demanding ascent of 463 steps through narrow staircases. The climb takes about 45 minutes and passes frescoes of the Last Judgment by Zuccari and Vasari. From the top, there are panoramic views of Florence in all directions.
45 min
Campanile di Giotto
The ticket allows an independent climb up Giotto’s Bell Tower within two days of the tour. This climb has 414 steps and takes about 45 minutes, offering additional views of Florence’s skyline. Note that this is included only for visits through 2026.
Crypt of Santa Reparata
Visitors may also enter the Crypt of Santa Reparata independently within two days. The crypt contains ancient stones older than the Dome and offers a quiet, reflective space. The visit takes about 20 minutes and is included only through 2026.
