Overview

This three-hour walking tour covers Florence’s center and includes skip-the-line entry to the Accademia Gallery. The tour begins at Strozzi Square, once a Renaissance marketplace for daily food vendors. From there, the guide leads through Florence’s historic center, visiting back streets and explaining the city’s Medieval and Renaissance background. At Piazza della Signoria, the main square, the guide discusses the political and artistic importance of Florence and introduces the Medici family. The walk continues to Ponte Vecchio, where the group spends about 20 minutes learning the history of this medieval bridge and browsing its jewelry shops, which were once butchers’ stalls. Next, the tour passes the exterior of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and Baptistery, highlighting Brunelleschi’s Dome. Then the exterior of Giotto’s Campanile, a tall Gothic bell tower, is viewed. Finally, the group enters the Accademia Gallery with skip-the-line tickets. Inside, the guide focuses on Michelangelo’s original David sculpture and shares details about the artist. The tour ends within the museum. The tour is led by a licensed English-speaking art historian and includes headsets for groups larger than five people. Bags larger than a normal-sized handbag are not allowed due to museum restrictions.
