Overview

This eight-hour tour in East São Miguel begins with a stop at the Santa Iria viewpoint on the north coast, where the coastline and the Gorreana Tea plantations can be seen in the distance. Next, the tour visits the Gorreana Tea Factory, Europe’s oldest tea plantation, for a 45-minute visit to learn about tea growing and processing, with an opportunity to sample local teas. The tour then continues to the Pico do Ferro viewpoint at 570 meters elevation, offering panoramic views of the Furnas volcano caldera, its lagoon, hot springs, and the nearby village. Afterward, the group arrives at the Furnas Valley to observe how the traditional Furnas stew is cooked underground using volcanic steam. A 90-minute lunch break follows at a local restaurant, where the Furnas stew is served. In the afternoon, the tour explores the village of Furnas, known for its fumaroles and mineral waters reputed for health benefits. Then, the tour visits Terra Nostra Park, a botanical garden featuring diverse plants and a thermal pool heated by volcanic activity, maintained between 37 and 40 degrees Celsius. Entrance to Terra Nostra Park is optional and requires an additional fee. The return trip follows the south coast to Vila Franca do Campo, where the tour ends with a visit to the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace, offering views over the town and the nearby islet.
