Overview

This 8 to 9-hour tour starts in Campbell River on Vancouver Island and travels by covered, heated boat across the Salish Sea to Orford Bay in Bute Inlet, within the traditional territory of the Homalco First Nation. The boat ride takes about two hours. During this time, the skipper and an Indigenous guide provide information about the area's human history and legends. Participants can watch for marine wildlife such as humpback whales, orcas, dolphins, sea lions, and bald eagles. Upon arrival at Orford Bay, the group enters the Great Bear country on Homalco traditional lands. A trained bear guide transports the group by mini-bus to several viewing sites and wildlife towers along the Orford and Algard Rivers. These locations offer safe opportunities to observe grizzly bears in their natural habitat. The guide explains bear behavior, habitat, and the Homalco people's historical and cultural connections to the land. After about three hours of bear viewing, the tour returns to Campbell River by boat, which takes approximately two hours. Participants can continue to watch for marine wildlife during the return trip. The tour includes snacks, lunch, tea, coffee, all taxes and fees, and access to on-board restrooms. Guests must be able to climb stairs to participate.
