Overview

The InterIslander ferry travels between Picton on the South Island and Wellington on the North Island of New Zealand. The crossing takes about three and a half hours and passes through Wellington Harbour and the Marlborough Sounds. Passengers can enjoy views from spacious outdoor viewing decks during the trip. The ferries operate every day throughout the year, served by two vessels: Kaitaki and Kaiārahi. Travelers may bring a vehicle or travel on foot. Each passenger is allowed two checked bags with a maximum weight of 23 kilograms each. Larger or additional luggage, sporting equipment, bicycles, and pets may incur extra fees. Pets travel in kennels available at the terminals for an additional charge, with a limited number of kennels provided. On board, there are cafes, bars, and fast-food takeaway outlets where food and drinks can be purchased. Facilities include lounge areas, an observation deck, a children’s play area, a nursery, and a movie theater on select vessels. Some facilities may have limited opening hours during off-peak sailings. Some sailings from Picton connect with the Coastal Pacific train service to Kaikoura and Christchurch. The ferry timetable may change without notice. Infants aged one year and under travel free. Children aged 2 to 17 pay a reduced fare and must be accompanied by an adult if under 16. Youths 17 and under are not allowed in the Premium Lounge. Smoking is permitted only in designated outdoor areas; it is not allowed elsewhere on the ship.
