Overview

The tour starts with a hotel pickup in Tbilisi at 9:00 a.m. It follows the Georgian Military Highway north toward the Russian border. The first stop is the Ananuri fortress complex, a former residence of the Argveti Dukes featuring churches and towers from the 16th and 17th centuries, overlooking the Zhinvali Water Reservoir. This stop lasts about 40 minutes. After Ananuri, the route continues to the confluence of two mountain rivers that maintain distinct colors after merging. The drive then goes over the Cross Pass to the Soviet-era Russian Georgian Friendship Monument, where there is a 40-minute stop to view a deep gorge in the Caucasus Mountains. Next, the tour reaches Kazbegi (officially Stepantsminda), where visitors spend about two hours. The main attraction here is the Gergeti Trinity Church, located at 2,200 meters above sea level. Access to the church may require a 4x4 vehicle in winter conditions; this ride is included if road conditions allow, otherwise there is a supplemental fee. Visitors can walk around the church and see views of the Kazbegi glacier. An optional 1-kilometer hike to Gveleti Waterfall is available outside of winter and takes about one and a half hours. For lunch, the tour stops at the restaurant of Rooms Hotel in Kazbegi for approximately one hour. If the tour takes place during snowy conditions, it may skip Kazbegi and instead focus on activities at the Gudauri ski resort, such as skiing, paragliding, snow biking, and cable car rides. The tour includes private transportation in a Mercedes minivan, sedan, or SUV depending on group size, an English-speaking guide, entrance fees to churches, honey tasting, and fuel surcharges. The return trip to Tbilisi takes about two hours, concluding the full-day tour which lasts between eight and twelve hours depending on stops and traffic.
