The Knife (Khukuri) Making Workshop takes place at the Forge of the Gurkhas in Kathmandu. The workshop lasts about four hours and guides participants through the process of making a traditional Nepalese khukuri knife, a symbol of the Gurkha warriors and hill tribes. Each participant will make a small six-inch blade. The process begins with cutting and hammering a raw piece of iron into the shape of the blade. For safety reasons, the grinding of the blade is done only by the host, and guests are asked to keep a safe distance during this step. After grinding, participants craft the handle from either wood or buffalo horn. The blade includes a nick near the handle, which prevents blood from reaching the handle and symbolizes the Hindu Trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. Tools necessary for knife making are provided, along with snacks during the session. At the end of the workshop, each guest takes home the knife they have made as a souvenir.

Please note that Khukuri making needs a lot of skill and years of experience! To make sure the experience stays safe, there are parts of the process that our host will do for you. The steps in which you will be participating are: 1. Hammering the iron. 2. The first grinding. 3. Buffing and polishing the knife at last. .
