Overview

This 2.5-hour bus tour runs from Hobart’s waterfront to the summit of kunanyi/Mt Wellington at 1270 metres above sea level. The tour includes 30 minutes at the summit to view Hobart, the east coast, and the World Heritage Area of Southern Tasmania from observation shelters and lookouts. The bus features on-board WiFi, air conditioning, and an informative local guide commentary during the trip. The Explorer Bus allows hop-on hop-off access at five bus stops within Wellington Park, including Fern Tree Playground, The Springs, The Chalet, and Big Bend. These stops provide access to alpine walking tracks and mountain bike trails of varying difficulty and length. Visitors can explore walks such as the Pipeline Track to Silver Falls, the Lenah Valley Track to Sphinx Rock, and the Organ Pipes Circuit Trail, which is a challenging 3-hour route around the dolerite columns. A complimentary bushwalking map is provided to all passengers. The bus is wheelchair accessible and can carry mountain bikes (bike freight fee applies). The Explorer Pass is valid all day, so guests can spend more time hiking or cycling before returning to Hobart on a later bus. The service operates daily in all weather conditions, but passengers should dress appropriately.

Itinerary

1

Fern Tree Playground

Optional hop-off is available at Fern Tree Park bus stop. This area has picnic facilities, toilets, wood-fired barbeques, and playground equipment. It is the starting point for shaded walks along fern gullies and streams. The Pipeline Track to Silver Falls is a short, easy 40-minute return walk along the old water pipeline route, suitable for mountain bikes. Nearby, Fern Tree Tavern offers food and drinks, open Tuesday to Sunday.

2

The Springs

Optional hop-off at The Springs bus stop, a level picnic area with tables, toilets, and gas-fired barbeques. It is the starting point for various walking and mountain biking trails on the eastern slopes of kunanyi/Mt Wellington. The Lenah Valley Track to Sphinx Rock is a 45-minute return walk through eucalypt forest with views of the Organ Pipes and Hobart below. Sphinx Rock is a sandstone platform with a 10-metre cliff drop, so caution is needed. Lost Freight Cafe nearby serves hot drinks and light meals daily.

3

Organ Pipes Circuit Trail

Optional hop-off at The Springs or The Chalet bus stops for the Organ Pipes Walk. This 3-hour return trail is one of Tasmania’s Great Short Walks and circles the base of the 120-metre-high dolerite columns called the Organ Pipes. Rock climbers are often present. The walk is difficult and can be done uphill from The Springs to The Chalet or downhill in 1.5 hours from The Chalet to The Springs.

4

Mount Wellington

The bus travels to the kunanyi/Mt Wellington summit at 1270 metres elevation. Passengers have 30 minutes to view Hobart, the east coast, and the World Heritage Area from multiple lookouts and a sheltered observation area with interpretive signs. Toilets including disabled facilities are available. Visitors can take a short 20-minute return walk on the Zig Zag Track across the alpine plateau to another lookout. A steep, difficult 1.5-hour downhill walk on the Zig Zag and Pinnacle Tracks leads to The Springs, offering views of the Organ Pipes and Hobart below. Passengers may hop-on a later bus from The Springs to return to Hobart. The bus also stops at Big Bend and other Wellington Park locations for exploring alpine walks and bike trails.
