Overview

This 45-minute walking visit takes you through the Venetian Prison's Palace, once managed by the Lords of the Night, who were police and judges during the Republic of Venice. The palace contains cramped prison cells, a court, and torture chambers showing real tools used for punishment. Life-size figures represent prisoners, judges, lawyers, and other prison staff, recreated from old manuscripts. The prison dates back to around 1500 and is among the earliest in Europe. Visitors can see original graffiti left by inmates and hear the story of Casanova’s daring escape from this maximum-security prison. The palace overlooks the Riva Degli Schiavoni and today houses a Venetian cultural institution. The guided visit includes live commentary in English and Italian, with audio commentary available in French and Spanish. Groups are limited to a maximum of 16 people, and skip-the-line tickets grant direct access to the site and its hidden areas. Along the way, the guide explains the role of the Council of The Ten, the top Venetian politicians who oversaw justice across Venetian territories, and describes the judicial system including courts, magistrates, and police who enforced the law.
