Overview

The Milford Sound Nature Cruise with Southern Discoveries lasts approximately one hour and 45 minutes. Guests check in at the Milford Wharf Visitor Centre at least 15 minutes before departure. The cruise takes place within Fiordland National Park, located in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island, an area known for its glacier-carved fiords including Milford Sound. The vessel is a purpose-built catamaran designed for comfort and clear views, featuring full-height windows inside and 360-degree outdoor decks. The skipper provides live commentary throughout the trip, sharing information about the natural environment and wildlife. Passengers will see the beech forest trail along the Milford shore and the prominent Mitre Peak mountain. The cruise passes close to Bowen Falls, which drops 162 meters and supplies hydroelectric power and water to the local settlement. The boat also approaches Stirling Falls, Milford Sound’s second-highest waterfall at 151 meters, allowing the vessel to get close beneath the waterfall’s drop. Behind Mitre Peak, the cruise passes Sinbad Gully, an area with steep granite cliffs and part of a conservation project to protect native species. Complimentary tea and coffee are served on board. On selected departures, guests can pre-order a picnic lunch or choose the To Kai buffet. A multi-lingual app with commentary is available for download before the cruise. The operator maintains a relaxed pace to allow passengers time to take photos and enjoy the natural surroundings without feeling rushed.
