Overview

The tour begins with a drive from New Orleans toward Cajun Country, crossing the Mississippi River on a large suspension bridge and passing through cypress swamps and sugarcane fields while the guide explains the history of the Cajun people. Next, guests take a fast airboat ride over marshes and deep bayous, led by a Cajun guide who shares information about local reptiles, healing plants, and birds. After the boat, visitors explore a swamp zoo on Bayou Boeuf. The group then visits Laura Plantation, established in 1804, where they spend about an hour and a half learning about the plantation's history and the lives of the enslaved people who lived there. The tour includes a stop at the Slavery Museum Exhibit, which presents personal stories of enslaved men, women, and children and their connections with their owners. Following Laura Plantation, the tour continues to Houmas House for a seated, unlimited gourmet buffet lunch in the mansion's formal dining room. After lunch, guests take a guided walk through the 250-year history of the estate, viewing its collection of art, furniture, and antiques that illustrate plantation life. The mansion is surrounded by 38 acres of gardens, which guests can also see during the visit. The entire tour lasts about nine hours and is conducted in a 14-passenger air-conditioned van with live commentary. Hotel pickup is included with a specified pickup time.
